Sergey Tkachenko and Denis Timofeyev are Ukrainian communists, members of the Communist Party of Ukraine (KPU). Trumped-up charges could mean 10-year prison sentences for each of them. They have been held in a pre-trial detention center (jail) in Dnepropetrovsk since September 1, 2014. During all that time, judicial investigations couldn’t prove their guilt, but the detention was extended due to the political situation. They and their families urgently need financial assistance.

During a search of their homes by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the banned newspaper “Novorossia,” grenades and TNT were seized.  There are strong reasons to believe that this “evidence” was planted by SBU officers: for example, in both cases, it was found at the end of the search, in locations that had been checked before.

The local KPU newsletter “Prometheus” is listed as the reason for the searches, even though an expert assessment shows it did not contain any separatist appeals. Lawyers for the communists point out that due process have been violated; for example, defense requests to cross-examine witnesses were rejected by the prosecutor. Furthermore, the court refuses to change the conditions of pre-trial detention and keeps the communists detained. According to their lawyers, this contradicts European law procedures which were introduced in Ukraine.

The prisoners’ families are having a rough time. Tkachenko has three minor children, and Timofeyev has two.

The Ukrainian secret service SBU has published on its website that it has arrested a man, who allegedly is a member of the underground organization “Revolutionary Communists” . It is Alexander Gerasimov – independent Ukrainian communist. He was arrested on charges of wanting to organize the creation of a communist terrorist group. However, no weapons were found, only communist magazines that are held against him. Spreading “communist propaganda” was banned in Ukraine, since a new law was adopted on April 9th (see publication on the website of the Ukrainian parliament).

The ban also included the Communist Party KPU and the communist organization Borotba. The possession of publications of Borotba motivated the Ukrainian secret service to arrest Alexander Gerasimov.

On sunday evening a huge statue of Lenin was destroyed in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov. Previously, several thousand Ukrainian nationalists gathered with blue and yellow State banners, the black-red flags of the Fascist Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and the fascists emblem of the Wolf Angel on a march “for Ukraine”. First, the slogan “Glory of Ukraine” and a Wolf Angel was scratched into the granite base of the Lenin monument and later the monument was toppled with ropes.

The action was done with the approval of the regional governor, the oligarch Igor Baluta, and the Minister of Interior Arsen Awakow. Baluta had shut off the square around the monument widely by the police to prevent counter-demonstrations. However, the officials let a truck with a winch, which brought the statue to fall, through the barrier. In Balutas arrangement for “dismantling of the monument to VI Lenin,” it said explicitly that the police was not present to protect the monument, but only to guard passers-by of the danger of being hit by flying debris. Interior Minister Awakow wrote on his Facebook page, riot police were on standby to prevent all “armed provocations” by opponents of the Nationalists. Opponent of the nationalists were mercilessly beaten and badly mauled, an announced counter-demonstration was banned.

In the morning, two days after the march of the nationalists a corpse that hung on the fence of a church was found. The circumstances and cause of death are not yet clear.
