“White Leader” of Neo-Nazi Azov Battalion Invited to European Parliament

Right-wing extremists, some heavily armed, protest in front of the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada) against a law to decentralize Ukraine in Kyiv today. After the law was adopted in the Rada, they tried to storm the building; the situation escalated.

The nationalists have attacked the security forces in front of the Rada with steel billets, smoke bombs and a (possibly homemade) grenade. The security forces used tear gas, stun grenades and batons against the rioters in turn. Among the protesters are supporters of the openly racist Svoboda party and the Right Sector. The Right Sector has openly called for its supporters to storm the Verkhovna Rada on their website and on VKontakte. The demolition could be another message to Poroshenko, whom the right-wing extremists have been threatening to topple and completely seize power for months.

More than one hundred security forces have been (partially seriously) hurt, 122 people are in hospitals, among them journalists; there is also said to be casualties. Extent and consequences of the conflict can not yet be estimated, because the protests are still going on (as of 17:00 CEST, August 31st, 2015). Poroshenko wants to address the unrest in a televised speech.
